The primary cause of PCS is due to cervical spine instability. A concussion injury acts much like a whiplash injury and can damage the supporting ligaments of the neck. When these specialized ligaments become damaged, instability occurs as a result.
The neck is meant to be stable, as it houses critical structures, such as the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, cranial nerves, and spinal nerves. When the neck becomes unstable, it can irritate these structures, causing the symptoms of PCS.
In our office, we specialize in treating the effects of post-concussion syndrome by accurately diagnosing the site, severity, and location of cervical spine instability, which is the most probable cause of PCS.
We also evaluate concussions and can, in most cases, diagnose and even prevent PCS from occurring.
